Ever watched Wicked and then thought, "Wait, where does this sit in the Oz timeline?" We've all been there. The gap between these two stories is way more interesting than you'd expect.
Wicked is basically a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It fills in the backstory you never knew you needed. And honestly? It makes the whole Oz universe way cooler.
The Big Connection
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy meets Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked shows us how Glinda and Elphaba (that's the Wicked Witch) became friends. Their bond starts strong but the world tears them apart.
Must Read
The time gap? It's not exactly nailed down perfectly, but most fans place Wicked events about twenty years before Dorothy's tornado hits. That's plenty of time for things to go very, very wrong.
The Spell That Changes Everything
Before Dorothy crashes into Oz, something awful happens in the land. Glinda casts a spell that turns a bunch of animals back into trees. Yeah, trees. Weird, right?
How Exactly Does Wicked Connect To 'The Wizard of Oz'?
This matters because those twisted animal-trees become the scary forest Dorothy has to fly right through with her balloon. See? Every creepy detail has a backstory.
Crazy Fun Facts
The original Wizard of Oz movie came out in 1939. The musical Wicked opened in 2003. That's sixty-four years of fans wondering what came first. Seriously wild.
The book Wicked by Gregory Maguire was published in 1995. It completely flipped the script. Suddenly the "villain" had a heart, a brain, and absolutely zero loyalty to the Wizard.
Wicked vs The Wizard of Oz: Exploring the Connection Between Two
Here's a fun one: Glinda's spell is basically the reason the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion exist. Without Elphaba's world crumbling apart, their journeys never happen. Mind blown yet?
The Wicked Witch Rosed in 1975
In the Broadway musical, "I'm Not That Girl" hints at Elphaba's crush on Fiyero. Yeah, that's the Tin Man before he was made of tin. The tragedy practically writes itself.
Discovering that connection between a love song and a rusted metal man is chef's kiss. You start rewatching everything with completely fresh eyes.
