Ever wondered if your PlayStation 5 can keep downloading a game while you walk away? The simple answer is yes, and that makes gaming feel more effortless. It’s a small trick that turns idle time into progress, letting you pick up your console and jump right in whenever you’re ready.
The main purpose of this feature is to let the PS5 handle downloads in Rest Mode. When the console sleeps, it still maintains a low-power connection to the internet, pulling in patches, updates, or whole titles without you having to babysit the process. This means you can charge your controller, grab a snack, or sleep through the night while the game arrives.
Different players benefit in unique ways. Casual users appreciate waking up to a freshly installed game without manual steps. Busy parents can schedule downloads for after bedtime, and competitive gamers avoid lost time by having updates ready before a match. Even travelers can pre‑load content on a Wi‑Fi hotspot, then play their PS5 handheld once the download finishes.

Typical scenarios you might notice include a new AAA title you bought digitally, a seasonal patch for Call of Duty, or a modest indie game with a large day‑one patch. In each case, putting the console into Rest Mode triggers the background download, and you’ll see the progress bar move even though the screen is off.

To get started, open Settings → System → Rest Mode, then enable “Allow Internet in Rest Mode.” Choose your preferred download schedule, and when you’re ready to rest, press the PS button and select “Enter Rest Mode.” Make sure your console is plugged into a power source that stays on, and you’ll see downloads finish automatically.
With a few clicks, you turn downtime into a smooth, hands‑free experience. So the next time you set the PS5 to rest, remember: the console is still working for you, delivering the next adventure while you take a break. Enjoy the game when it’s finally ready!
