So you're planning a party, and someone says, "Let's make jello shots!" Smile, my friend — you're about to become everyone's new best person. But first, let's talk about what spirit takes these little wiggly cubes from meh to legendary.
The golden rule? Go with a liquor that's around 40% ABV. Anything stronger and your gelatin will refuse to set. Anything weaker and your neighbors will point and laugh. No pressure.
Vodka is the undisputed MVP here. It's neutral, clean, and plays nice with literally any flavor of jello. Want lime? Grapefruit? Wild strawberry? Vodka simply nods approvingly and gets along with everyone. It's the friendliest dance partner your jello could ever hope for.

But don't ignore tequila, especially for a margarita-inspired shot. Pair it with lime gelatin and a tiny dusting of salt rim, and suddenly you're standing on a beach in Cancún — okay, you're actually in your kitchen, but the feeling is real!

Rum also deserves a spot at the table. White rum with tropical jello flavors creates something absurdly fun, like your taste buds just booked a vacation. Meanwhile, whiskey fans — and we love you — should note that bourbon paired with lemon or honey gelatin is an unexpectedly sophisticated treat.
Rumors swirl about using wine or beer, but honestly? You'll end up with a sloshy mess that looks like regret in cube form. Stick with spirits, skip the drama.

Here's the bottom line: vodka is your safe bet, tequila brings the party energy, and rum keeps things tropical. Choose your adventure, keep it at 40% ABV, and party responsibly — at least mostly responsibly.
Now go whip up a tray of these shiny little beauties, watch your friends' eyes light up, and take a bow. You're not just a party guest anymore — you're a jello shot artist. And honestly? Life's a whole lot more fun with a little wiggle on the table. Cheers! 🥂
