Wondering how wide a full mattress is in inches? A full mattress, also called a double, measures 54 inches wide, making it one of the most popular choices for solo sleepers, teenagers, and small spaces. It's wider than a twin but narrower than a queen, striking a comfortable balance between affordability and spaciousness.
Knowing this measurement matters because it directly affects room planning and comfort. Whether you're decorating a college dorm, a guest room, or a child's bedroom, understanding the width helps you allocate space wisely. A full mattress gives you extra room to stretch out compared to a twin, which is perfect for growing kids or adults who want more breathing room without upgrading to a queen.
For example, a college student moving into a small dorm room often chooses a full mattress because it fits snugly against the wall while still offering plenty of space to sleep comfortably. Parents upgrading a toddler's crib bed to a bigger size frequently pick a full for this same reason — it's a smart middle ground.
