Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to live in the most secure prison in the United States? Surprise — it's actually located not in some ominous big city, but tucked away in the quiet town of Florence, Colorado. Yes, you read that right, Florence!
Meet ADX Florence — Every Inmate's Worst Nightmare (and Our Fascination)
ADX Florence, officially known as the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility, is literally nicknamed "the Alcatraz of the Rockies." It's part of the nearby Florence Federal Correctional Complex, and honestly, just saying "supermax" should give you chills. The place was designed to hold the most dangerous criminals the country has ever produced.
Now here's the big question you clicked on: how many prisoners are in ADX Florence? The facility has a total capacity of about 490 inmates, but typically houses roughly 400 prisoners at any given time. That might sound small — but don't let the number fool you, because every single one of them is someone the government doesn't take lightly.
Must Read
You've probably heard names like Robert Hanssen, Ted Kaczynski, or Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán — all former residents of this place. Talking about prison counts usually sounds dry, but when it involves people the media has tracked for years, it gets genuinely exciting, doesn't it?
Why Does It Only Hold 400 People?
Great question, and here's where it gets fascinating — each inmate lives in a seven-foot-by-twelve-foot cell essentially 23 hours a day. There's no windows to the outside world, no contact with other inmates, and doors are opened by remote control. Can you even imagine that level of isolation? It's breathtaking.

The small number of prisoners makes total sense when you think about it — ADX isn't a place you go for pickpocketing. It houses people who have committed acts of terrorism, espionage, and large-scale organized crime. Basically, if someone's in here, they've seriously crossed the line.
Here's a fun aside: some inmates never even leave their cells for years. The mental discipline required to survive that kind of confinement would put most of our daily stress into perspective. Suddenly, that tough Monday doesn't seem so bad, right?
