Did Rick And Morty Change Voice Actors

Ever been mid-episode, sipping your soda, and suddenly thought, "Wait… did that sound different?" You're not alone! The Rick and Morty universe has kept fans buzzing about voices more than ever lately.

The Big Question: Did They Change?

Yes, they did! In 2021, Adult Swim made a surprising move and replaced series co-creator Justin Roiland with new voices for both Rick and Morty. It was a jaw-dropper for longtime fans who never imagined hearing anyone else as those iconic characters.

For seasons 1 through 2, Roiland provided the voices for both leads in every episode. The chemistry was raw, improvised, and wildly unpredictable—hallmarks of the show's early charm. Everyone assumed he'd be there forever, right?

Who Replaced Justin Roiland?

No single actor took over both roles. Instead, Ian Cardoni stepped in as Rick while Harry Belden took on the part of Morty. It was a clever solution that actually gave each character a more distinctive vocal identity.

Cardoni brought a deeper, more grounded grit to Rick's chaotic energy. Meanwhile, Belden captured Morty's signature nervous stammer without simply copying Roiland's exact delivery. Honestly? It worked better than many fans expected.

Why the Change Happened

The swap came after serious allegations surfaced against Roiland, prompting Adult Swim to cut ties with him entirely. It was a major moment—not just for the show but for the entire animation industry. The creators faced a tough decision but prioritized moving forward.

Shows have survived cast changes before; The Fresh Prince and Doctor Who both pulled it off famously. Still, doing it with voices as recognizable as Rick and Morty's felt like a seismic shift. The fan community reacted with everything from outrage to cautious optimism.
